David King:The message of the recent election
To the editor:
Now that the dust has settled, we all have an opportunity to reflect on the results on the recent special election to replace former U.S. Sen. John Kerry. The results aare satisfying, not only because Ed Markey, a proven effective legislator, won the election, but also because the GOP vision of America was repudiated.
Under our Democratic administration, taxes for lower and middle Americans are lower, the economy continues to grow, the deficit continues to shrink and the stock market is at record highs.
Despite this growing prosperity, the GOP continues to advocate for less assistance to Americans who, as the result of bad luck or bad choices, are struggling to survive. The recent election is a reminder to all of us that the Mitt Romneys and the Gabriel Gomezes of the world would not hesitate for an instant to ship our jobs overseas or cut our health care or pensions if it meant greater profits.
It is a reminder that any of us could end up in a situation where we would be deeply grateful that it is an Ed Markey, and not a Gabriel Gomez, who would be making the decision whether or not our medical care was covered, or we got a few bucks from the USDA for a jar of peanut butter for us and our kids. It is a reminder that we are not figures on Paul Ryan’s balance sheet.
We are all Americans, and we take care of each other.
