Lindsay Jakows: It’s time to act on climate change
To the editor:
I commend the Daily Hampshire Gazette for its recent coverage of local and global projects to combat climate change, and urge readers to mobilize in support of long-awaited action by our national leaders.
As Massachusetts residents gear up for whatever weather summer may bring, we must be reminded of measures we can take to not only ensure our survival this summer, but for the future. It’s time we not only recognize nearby recent disasters like superstorm Sandy for what they are — the effects of global warming — but also call on decision makers who have the power to pass the national policies necessary to preserve our future.
Namely, President Obama must not waste any time in following through on his promises to cut pollution from existing power plants. Additionally, Sen. Warren must also raise her outspoken voice in favor of these measures. As a voice that has consistently championed consumers’ rights against powerful interests, she clearly has the strength to combat corporations that contribute to climate change.
As an organizer with MASSPIRG and Environment Massachusetts, I’ve worked to help students and other citizens fire up their communities to take action.
Those who represent us must do the same. Our future depends on it.
