Linda Honan: Not happy with U.S. Postal Service
To the editor:
Today I mailed a package to Ireland from the post office on University Drive in Amherst.
I bought a roll of bubble wrap from the post office, and asked if I could borrow a pair of scissors and have a small piece of tape. This was a small package in a bubble envelope, and I just wanted to reinforce the open end. The clerk gave me the scissors but said I would have to buy a roll of tape.
This struck me as nonsense: I didn’t need a roll, just a few inches. I asked to talk to the manager, who said this was not a local decision but the post office policy.
I bought the tape and mailed the package. However, I was struck by the ineptness of a business decision that annoys customers in the interests of saving a very small amount of money. No wonder the USPS is losing customers — next time, I’ll bring my packages to the UPS store down the street.
