Lee Spector & Rebecca Neimark: Override story lacked context
To the editor:
We were surprised by the lack of balance in your cover story on the Proposition 2½ override vote in Northampton (“Taxing Times,” Gazette, June 17).
Your article focused in detail on the taxes paid by individuals, but said nothing about the drastic cuts in state aid that have made the override necessary. Your article also failed to note that many of Northampton’s neighboring communities have higher residential tax rates, and that the city government has recently taken several significant steps to cut costs and save money. Your article focused on the financial hardships of some community members without mentioning that exemptions to the override are available for low-income seniors and members of other special populations.
The state has dropped the ball on funding essential services, and current law limits our options. If we want to keep Northampton safe and vibrant then we must support this override while continuing to work for change at the state level. Please join us in voting yes for the override June 25.
