Jeffery Bubar: Consider pool in Northampton override vote

To the editor:

While much of the concern is over cuts to the performing arts in our schools, if the Proposition 2½ override fails, voters should be concerned over the closing on weekends of the Aquatic & Family Center at JFK Middle School, which means the pool, gym and tennis courts. This could mean enough loss of revenue to permanently close this affordable fitness facility, that this writer uses for cardiovascular fitness.

This writer also has seen firsthand the benefits of private swim lessons on both children and young adults. This would be lost with a weekend closing if the override fails. Gone, too, would be income from rental of the JFK gym.

In three years JFK Middle School will be paid for, and no one wants to see this happen with a closed pool and gym. Likewise we must ensure adequate public safety. In the closing days of the Proposition 2½ override campaign, the slogan must be “Arts, Pool, Police: Vote Yes on June 25.”
