Ann M. Hennessey: Support for override invests in Northampton
To the editor:
I am writing in support of the override in Northampton’s June 25 special election. As a proud resident, parent of two public school students and property owner in Florence, I cannot think of a better investment in our community’s future or our children’s future.
My partner and I made a decision to move here because of the school system. We stretched our budget to purchase a home in Florence because we knew that the schools were excellent, the community valued the arts and the school system had an engaged community that vigorously supported student and teacher work. We realized that Northampton’s vibrant and safe downtown and fabulous schools would increase the long-term value of our home. Bottom line, Northampton was a solid investment in our family’s future.
While I agree that we have to work hard for a more equitable funding formula for our schools on the state level, this override will put the city of Northampton on stable footing for the next few years and keep the schools and our community excellent.
I implore everyone who cares about our community to support our legislators in their work to reconfigure the funding formula so that communities like Northampton can continue to work to make our city vibrant. I also urge my neighbors to join me in voting yes June 25.
