Paul Borneo: Local traffic only on North Street during construction
To the editor:
I live on North Street next to the sewer construction and we’re having a ongoing problem here with dust.
Starting at 7 a.m. each weekday, the road is closed for construction. Work ends at 3:30 p.m. and the road opens to two-way traffic.
However, on the days when the road is torn up the traffic bathes our neighborhood in a fine, alluvial dust, billowing and encompassing our homes just when it’s time to open the windows to cool off. It’s not like living on a dirt or gravel road — this is fine river soil that has been freshly worked — and it has hardly rained in weeks. Grit in your mouth, brown dirt in your nose, dirt on everything in your house — coughing, sneezing, itchy contact lenses.
No one wants to live in a dust cloud — yet we are asking this of North Street residents. The street is blocked to two-way traffic during the morning rush hour so we know that we can get by without it. I’ve suggested to the DPW that we post temporary signs when needed that say “Local traffic only.” It seems like a problem with an easy solution.
Northampton is a progressive community. Let’s take into account the health of our neighbors and limit North Street to local traffic when the road is torn up.
