Stephanie O’Keeffe: Praise for care taken by UMass Transit/PVTA drivers
To the editor:
I would like to express my appreciation to the UMass Transit/PVTA student bus drivers. I have long been impressed by their driving skills, particularly their execution of tight turns at tough intersections. But my respect for them has reached new heights as I have started bicycling around town.
The downtown area, with all its traffic, parked cars, crosswalks, intersections and bus stops, is a lot to contend with for a “newbie” bike commuter. But I have noticed that, without fail, UMass Transit/PVTA drivers are hyper-aware, and always give me plenty of time and space. They gauge their approach to and exit from bus stops with tremendous attention to the small — and in my case, slow — two-wheeled vehicles with whom they share the road.
While I had expected that the buses would feel intimidating as I got used to riding on busy streets, they actually make me feel safer.
Big thank you to all those drivers!
