Andrea Ayvazian: Northampton’s Mountain Goat will be sorely missed
To the editor:
I recently returned from a trip overseas and went directly to the Mountain Goat to heap praises on A.J. and Bill for outfitting me perfectly for my journey. Imagine my surprise when I found the store closed and locked. I was and am bereft.
For months A.J. and Bill had helped me choose the right gear so I could withstand the cold, wind and rain as I walked the Camino de Santiago across northern Spain. Each day on the Camino I sent blessings their way and lifted prayers of thanksgiving for the attention they had given me and the fabulous gear I was wearing, using and carrying. A.J. had personally fitted me with the perfect boots and the best socks and had said, “You’ll walk the entire Camino without getting one blister.” He was right. And I was legendary for it. As people limped along due to terrible blisters (some even had to return home), I trotted along without a blister for the entire 500 miles.
The enormous time A.J. and Bill spent helping me prepare for the Camino cannot be overstated — and with such patience and kindness. The Mountain Goat was like an anchor in downtown Northampton — not only a great store with great stuff, but with caring, knowledgeable and good people there to help. Thank you, A.J. and Bill. You and Mountain Goat will be sorely missed. Downtown Northampton will not be the same without you.
