Barbara Seddon: Parking tickets no welcome mat for city visitors

To the editor:

So we drop a friend at the airport and think, “Gee, we should stop in Northampton for some lunch and do some shopping. The shops there are great.” Turn the corner onto Main Street as someone is pulling out and we park. And we go to Bueno y Sano for lunch. About half way through I remember that Northampton has meters, or some equivalent thereof, and we run back to the car. There’s the ticket.

I go to the machine and buy one hour of time and put it on the dash and we go shopping. I come back and there’s another ticket.

Now maybe the residents are used to this and/or they know where to go for longer-term parking, but as an out-of-towner I felt very unwelcome and I’m sure it’s not good for business.

By the way, I learned about the payment machines when I was here in January and got a ticket because I couldn’t find a payment machine. Needless to say, we won’t be back except to go to WEBS, where there’s lots of free parking.
