John Sheehan: Congress must stop funding ‘senseless wars’

To the editor:

On the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, I would like to thank MoveOn.org for giving ordinary citizens a voice about what happens in our country. Ten years ago, with the help of MoveOn, more than 1 million of us marched in New York City to protest the invasion of Iraq. I will never forget the sight of crowded streets and sidewalks, as I emerged from the train station in Manhattan. It was a wonderful feeling to see New York shut down with people holding signs protesting the invasion of Iraq and listening to anti-war speeches.

Unfortunately, Bush, Cheney and the profiteers who started the war brushed aside our demonstration and the millions of people who demonstrated all over the world.

Now those same decision-makers are trying to focus our attention on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and human service programs as the cause of the national deficit, while totally ignoring the $6 trillion price tag of their wars — not to mention the hundreds of thousands of people who have died for their wars.

How long will Congress continue to fund these senseless wars? How long will it take these legislators to realize that they are bankrupting our country financially and morally? How long will it take for them to realize that they were victims of mass ‘deception,’ not weapons of mass destruction?
