Dave King: No sympathy here for super rich

To the editor:

The recent Associated Press article “Analysis suggests rich not escaping tax burden” points out that middle- and lower-income earners aren’t paying as high a tax rate as they used to. It takes the writers a while to get around to the reason for this: Middle- and lower-income earners are making less money than they have for decades, whereas incomes of the super rich are higher than ever.

The authors cite the fact that the lowest 2 percent of earners aren’t paying any income tax at all as an illustration of how the rich are being persecuted. However, I doubt they will get much sympathy from the growing proportion of Americans who are being forced into poverty, largely as the result of the economic and social policies supported by the wealthiest.

Despite this merciless persecution, there is at least some consolation to being super rich (besides the second homes, yachts, etc.) and that is the resources to create and fund conservative think tanks like the Tax Policy Center to churn out misleading reports that are then dutifully lapped up by the AP to justify the growing economic inequality that threatens the core of our democracy.
