David West: Of a valued friend and tours in 1940 Buick
To the editor:
A friend of many years lives just down the road and I stop to see him now and then. We take a ride around town to see if there are good changes in progress.
Ernie, who came to live in Burgy several years ago, likes to ride in my 1940 Buick. We sit up tall, where the view is better, and glide up and down the hills and talk of days gone by. My friend, who was born in 1913, will reach his century mark in October 2013, his lucky year!
The years have not dimmed his spirit and he is 11 years my senior. He sees better than most and hears without aids. He watches for me to drive up and fetch him from his abode and meets me at the door in anticipation of another ride about the town.
As a retired firefighter, Ernie is interested in buildings and many of the historic places of value in our area. He himself is one of the valuable people in our town and is well-recognized for that by the friendly and congenial folks about him. He is a pleasure to count as a friend.
