Michele Spring-Moore: Praise for City Council’s stance against hate crimes

To the editor:

As did a Monday letter-writer, I found my stomach turning when I saw the graphic, bloody photograph of Daniel Couchon, who was assaulted outside a Northampton restaurant Feb. 2.

However, my response was not disgust because the local daily newspaper had published the photo, but because in this era — even in a supposedly liberal, “diverse” college town — gay men (and transgender people, bisexuals, lesbians and others who may not conform to gender and other cultural norms) have to worry about being attacked while walking around downtown.

This is the truly appalling aspect of this brutal beating, to which the Northampton City Council responded admirably by passing an anti-hate crimes resolution Feb. 7.

My thanks to the council for this important symbolic act.

Michele Spring-Moore
