Cindy Mahoney: A runner’s reflections after heart attack

To the editor:

On Feb. 1, which happened to be National “Go Red” for Women’s Heart Day, I was admitted to Baystate Medical Center because of a heart attack.

Being relatively young and thin and a regular runner, I was definitely not the typical heart attack patient. In my case, it was a spontaneous coronary artery dissection.

I am very grateful to Northampton emergency workers, the staff at Pioneer Valley Family Medicine and those at Baystate for the professionalism and compassion they showed. This was especially evident as they were dealing with a woman who came into the doctor’s office having finished my run still in my running gear and who in the ambulance asked if I would be back in time to pick up my kids after school.

I appreciate how fortunate I am to have ready access to good health care and insurance to help pay for it and wish everyone had the same.

In honor of National Heart Month, take a moment to check out the American Heart Association’s website at www.heart.org for signs and symptoms of a heart attack — and listen to your heart.
