Why literature, and teachers, matter

To the editor:

What an excellent and affecting tribute to Northampton High School teacher Ernie Brill, who has so effectively touched the hearts and minds of many of his students (“Literary legacy: Departing teacher says goal was to make kids fall in love with a book,” Jan. 26-27).

This article attests to the importance of multiculturalism and literature in our schools and to the notion that the humanities are still relevant in today’s curriculum.
