Children pay price of war mentality

To the editor:

Didn’t James Madison get it spot-on when he observed that the role of government is to protect the “opulence of the wealthy” from the masses?

It should be no surprise that, being that Madison is one of our founding fathers, we now have the kind of America he was alluding to.

We have an elite class that has been allowed to accumulate a truly disgusting portion of America’s treasure, of the world’s treasure, while over a billion human beings live in squalor.

In America there is now a solid corporate/governmental infrastructure determined to maintain our status as “empire athwart the world.” For that, of course, we all must suffer perpetual war. The collective mentality of violence in the society seeps down and infects all the individual citizens. Everyone’s armed to the teeth. And increasingly, predictably, someone goes cuckoo, and lots of people die. (“Oh, my, let’s convene a governmental panel to determine the cause of this horrendous act of violence!”)

Who’s to blame? We are all responsible for creating and maintaining the war mentality. And there is a price to pay — the children bleed.
