Thinks columnist’s mind made up long in advance
To the editor:
Jay Fleitman gets really, really wound up in his Dec. 4 column. He begins calmly enough with an anecdote that I’ll bet is apocryphal, but fits the theme of the piece, which is “My Way Is the Right Way.”
But later he reaches high dudgeon, declares “Obama is not my (p)resident” (sic) and denounces Elizabeth Warren as a “partisan bomb thrower.” By the end of the piece he is proclaiming the last election a victory for Republican principles. Crazy.
It speeds things along, Mr. Fleitman, when you don’t need to take the time to consider opposing views and whether they have any merit. You already know you are right; now it’s just a matter of convincing unbelievers. But shopworn arguments, no matter how stridently delivered, don’t convince anyone. You should have red-penciled “Not an accidental Republican” before hitting the “Send” key.
