Treatment can address traumatic memories

To the editor:

I followed with great interest your recent series on combat veterans coping with PTSD. Thanksgiving is a fitting time to honor our veterans. Their sacrifices often extend well beyond their years of service. Bravo to the veterans who have shared their first-person accounts of facing their haunting memories.

Your detailed and respectful coverage will make it easier for other veterans and their loved ones to seek help.

As you emphasize, help is available. Your story mentions EMDR treatment which is provided at the VA medical center. This therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, has been rated as a top treatment by the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Research has demonstrated that its methods make it the most efficient and user-friendly approach to resolving traumatic memories.
