Food carts bring good tastes to Amherst

To the editor:

The vibrancy of downtown Amherst is mightily enhanced by our terrific vendors, including the recently established New York Halal.

These vendors help make create the atmosphere of our downtown (and our area) that unique combination of down-home and international, rural and metropolitan, hip and traditional, sophisticated and parochial that we love to boast about.

And might I add, hospitable and sheltered.

Those who want a cozy bistro with great food and an intimate atmosphere have a great option; those who want a casual eatery with great food and an informal atmosphere have a full range of competing options.

But having the aromas of the Middle East right here and being able to enjoy a hot, fresh falafel “sandwich” while blowing away snowflakes or complaining about the heat is a welcome addition and, I believe, a draw that only serves to attract people, potential customers, to our brick-and-mortar restaurants and stores.

Amherst has a high population of expatriate New Yorkers and international travelers, most of whom, I imagine, welcome vendors on our downtown sidewalks as an important component of the anomaly that Amherst is.
