George Goodwin, Rhoda Honigberg: Huge stakes in upcoming election
To the editor:
“I wish we had a Hobby Lobby around here, so I could boycott it.” This was the sentiment expressed by a friend of ours recently.
If the Senate falls into the hands of Republicans in November we can expect even greater restrictions on our rights. In a recent letter, we referred to court decisions that have opened the floodgates to big money pouring into political campaigns; now we see the religion of employers used to restrict the right of their female employees to birth control. We can expect from such restrictions unwanted pregnancies and more abortions.
We urge voters to consider the Supreme Court when they make their choices in November — and, of course, later in the 2016 presidential election.
What the Congress and the president can do is likely to be nullified by a Supreme Court even more right wing than the present five-vote conservative majority. It should be remembered that all five were appointed by Republican presidents.
The Senate has the power to confirm or block Supreme Court appointees.
Please remind your friends and relatives in states where crucial Senate choices will be made this November of the importance of their support for Democrats, both with their contributions and their votes.
