Carol J. Powell: Worthington should hire best candidate as chief, regardless of hometown
To the editor:
A petition is circulating in the town of Worthington in relation to the hiring of a new police chief. It basically says that the new police chief should be a resident of Worthington.
What some people signing the petition might not realize is that it appears to be vectored toward one candidate and does not take into account who is the most qualified person for the job.
The people of the town should want the individual who will do the best job regardless of residency. There were certain qualifications and certifications required of the applicants and the Select Board should hire the person who best fulfills those qualifications and certifications.
Would you want your chief of police to be a lesser-qualified or an unqualified candidate because he lives in Worthington, just to fulfill the desires of certain individuals?
Let the Select Board know your feelings.
