Don Schneier: Pseudo-moral formulations are just self-serving

To the editor:

A significant part of current right-wing propaganda is the kind of falsification of statistics that Clare Higgins exposes in her Aug. 24 column. Another is the complementary assertion that the poor ‘deserve’ their poverty. Such a pseudo-moral formulation abets those interests in two respects.

First, it functions to justify either the neglect of, or the draconian treatment of, the needy. Second, it is a corollary of the self-delusion that its proponents ‘deserve’ their fortuitous circumstances. Such self-serving rhetoric should not be confused with “expressing an opinion,” which articulates a perspective on objective conditions.
