Willliam C. Walden: Writer’s assumptions about Southampton incident not proof
To the editor:
A recent letter writer (Gazette, July 19) charged Southampton citizens with racism based on the fact that a young black man was reported by a resident to Southampton police as someone who seemed questionable. There’s one minor problem with the writer’s allegation.
There is no hard proof offered to establish that the young man’s race was the basis for the resident’s suspicion. Perhaps it was, but no proof is stated.
Instead, the writer assumes as true the conclusion to be proven. I recommend caution about accepting an assumption as a proven conclusion, regardless of where anyone fits in the political spectrum.
