Nancy Stark: Has picked up hundreds of animals on roads

To the editor:

Thank you Maureen Ippolito, for your letter July 17 concerning the safety of animals. I too am concerned about our wildlife. I usually pull over to move a dead animal off the road unless it’s too dangerous.

This spring I have come across a lactating mother raccoon. I wonder if people understand that this means there are young raccoons out there who will starve to death. A few days ago I pulled over to pick up two very young raccoons who had both died at the same time.

I can only assume that the mother was already dead and they got hungry. I have picked up cats and dogs, lactating squirrels and rabbits, bluejays and a blue heron. I pick up about one hundred animals a year in all kinds of weather. I just hope people will take this to heart and slow down.
