Sara Weinberger: Sickened to read guest column on Zimmerman verdict
To the editor:
After reading Gregory Clay’s guest column, “Zimmerman jury delivered correct verdict,” I wondered if I was really reading The Daily Hampshire Gazette.
This article contains a litany of unsubstantiated and racist remarks to blame not only Trayvon Martin, but black Americans for crime and racial profiling. He never once mentions institutional racism and uses victim-blaming to suggest that it is black people who need to “adjust and adapt” and should “take off that hoodie.” I was sickened as I read this piece.
At a time, when our community needs to come together to affirm our intolerance of racism, our local newspaper gives space to such hateful and ignorant words. There is no place in The Gazette for such racism! Our community deserves an apology and a retraction for printing this column.
