The question has generated lively debate on the Gazette’s editorial pages over the past few weeks, on the floor of the City Council meetings during public comment time, and no doubt will again tonight at a forum at the Bridge Street School at 7 p.m.

The question of whether and when to override the provisions of the 1980 state law known as Proposition 2½ that limits the amount a community can increase its property tax levy from year to year is a difficult one for any community. We hope the letters and columns on this page illuminate the issue for Gazette readers. We encourage everyone to vote.
