Joe Bodin: Unrepaired Amherst roads are the worst
To the editor:
At the Amherst Town Meeting, members asked why there are so many potholes. A major reason why the roads are getting progressively worse is the town does very little, if any, preventative maintenance. Several years ago, when asked why Amherst does not fill its road cracks, the answer was, “We do have a crack-filling machine.” Since then, the number of cracks has continued to increase. There is little evidence of the crack-filling system being used.
Drive around in the local towns, Hadley and South Hadley, for example, and you will see the black stripes on their roads but you’ll have a hard time finding any on Amherst roads. Our unfilled cracks fill with water and freeze. The cracks get bigger, the damage gets worse and the time and cost to repair them grows exponentially.
Amherst needs to do the preventative maintenance done by our neighbors, otherwise, Amherst’s roads will continue to be the worst in this area. A little maintenance is worth a lot of dollars of repair.
