Karen M. Kingsley: Donate to Relay for Life to help celebrate another day
To the editor:
“Why do you Relay?” This is a question I often get asked. And my answer is simple. “So someone can share another birthday with their loved ones.” This will be my third year as co-captain of the Relay For Life team, Blue By You.
We participate in the Hampshire County Relay at Look Park. We won the “Spirit Award” two years in a row and hope to three-peat this year! Our first year, my Mom was our survivor. As her caregiver, the survivor and caregiver laps were emotional, as was the ribbon cutting ceremony when Mom got to cut the ribbon. I still have that ribbon and the picture of her cutting the ribbon, and I will never forget how proud she was when I handed her our Spirit Award after Relay. But that is all I have of her now: memories and mementos.
Mom wasn’t there last year, and watching the survivor lap was even more emotional because Mom was missing. And that is why I Relay. Birthdays: Maybe you’ve stopped celebrating them or take them for granted, but I just wish I could have had more with her.
So this year, when you see the signs for Relay For Life, or see an upcoming fundraiser or a donation can, or receive an email from someone participating...please give. It could mean another birthday for someone.
