JFK students speak out on proposed arts cuts

To the editor:

We are students in the second-period class in Room 219 at JFK Middle School in Northampton. We are concerned about the budget cuts to the arts programs. We feel the arts programs are very important because they’re a way to express ourselves, in ways words can’t. Reading music is learning another language and helps us with mathematical reasoning. Singing helps you say things you can’t just say, and helps us experience poetry. The study of visual arts broadens our horizons and helps us see things through other people’s eyes. Photography captures life’s most cherished moments, and inspires more detailed writing.

The young people of our community need these arts to escape from the everyday drama of our stressful lives. Please save our arts.
