Appreciates police work in downtown Northampton

To the editor:

I am writing to thank the Northampton Police Department for what appears to be an increase in the number of traffic stops in the downtown area. Maybe they are showing off their spiffy new SUVs, or more likely a decision was made to step up enforcement to increase safety. Whatever the reason, the increase in flashing blue lights in and around downtown is noticeable and appreciated.

Nobody likes to get tickets, and I have a certain amount of sympathy for those who receive them, but at the same time the slowing and calming of traffic, increasing awareness and observation of crosswalk laws and reducing the number of drivers trying to beat red lights and endangering pedestrians and bicyclists are an important part of police work in keeping the community safe.

Again, thanks to NPD for a stepped-up effort that I hope continues and becomes a regular priority of the department.
