Pledge’s true purpose no secret to students
To the editor:
In the discussions of Northampton High School’s decision to ask students to write a “pledge” in the wake of the Newtown shootings and the threat to the school, one fact has been little mentioned: the kids in the high school knew from the start that they were providing handwriting samples. My son, a freshman, came home that day and said, “They had us give them handwriting samples so they could figure out who wrote the note.” Whether school officials were right or wrong to take this step, one thing is clear: the Northampton schools are doing an excellent job of nurturing our kids’ critical thinking skills.
