Faculty football report stuck to finances

To the editor:

Gazette sportswriter Matt Vautour accuses me of bad research in a Jan. 1 post on his blog.

I would never accuse him of that; I only accuse him of being unwilling to read. The report that I co-authored with Nelson Lacey (a proponent of football), with the detailed assistance of Athletic Director John McCutcheon and his staff, says nothing about moving UMass to Division III.

It only assesses — using data provided by the UMass administration — how much the university is spending on FBS football as compared to what we were spending on football before the move to the big time.

We are spending $8 million more. The university, its students, its alumni and, yes, its faculty should decide if they think that number is too big or too small.

Anyone can read the report at www.umass.edu/senate/fs_docs/2012-2013/722/SEN_DOC_NO_13-017.pdf.
