Open up sight lines at dangerous crosswalk
To the editor:
As my apartment overlooks the deadly crosswalk on New South Street in Northampton and I use it daily, I’d like to offer one quick and easy step the city might immediately take to aid drivers in recognizing pedestrians entering the crosswalk from the opposite side of the street from the park. Soon, weather conditions will only compound the problem.
One parking space has already been removed but it is not enough. Two more should be removed so the line of sight for approaching drivers gives them more time to slow down and stop.
And by the way, I believe the number of accidents repeatedly cited, 21 in the last 10 years, is wrong. Many times an accident occurs there and is not reported.
A couple of weeks ago a truck stopped for a pedestrian and a smaller car crashed into it. The truck was fine, but the car’s roof buckled up about a foot and a half. The fellow used brute force to push his hood almost back in place and drove off.
