Return UMass students to their own campus
To the editor:
I think the solution to the student rental problem in Amherst is to make dormitory residency mandatory for all except married students with children.
This would have the effect of causing rents to fall, due to the drop in demand at the current price. The lower rents would allow small families who work here in town, especially at UMass, to live here, instead of commuting, often by bus, from as far away as West Springfield and beyond. And this would put the student misbehavior problem back on campus, where it belongs.
A student who is truly dedicated will want to live on campus, close to all the buildings he or she uses, and the libraries, for greater efficiency and improved time management.
