Boys Hoop D2 semifinals

A quick look at Thursday's Division 2 boys semifinal games at the Curry Hicks Cage.

No. 2 Hoosac (18-3) vs. No. 3 Mahar (18-3), 6
How they got here
: Hoosac beat Wahconah 50-42; Mahar beat Taconic 64-61
Outlook: Mahar stands in the way of Hoosac, everyone’s preseason finals favorite, advancing to a second straight D2 title game. The Hurricanes have one of the best players regardless of divisions in 1,000-point scorer Robbie Burke. Junior point guard Nick Aitken is steady and sound. Zach Ziemba adds some length in the post. Mahar has one of the best in 1,000-point scorer G/F Dane Jobst. But F Tyriq Rochester and G Phil Diphillipo are strong players as well. Burke beat Mahar at the buzzer in the quarterfinal round last year.
Pick: Mahar (I’m calling an upset)

No. 1 Sabis (20-2) vs. No. 5 Drury (16-5), 7:45
How they got here
: Sabis beat Belchertown 87-55; Drury beat Hampshire 57-48
Projected Sabis starting lineup: G Andre King, G Xavier Garcia, F Kamali Bey, F John Williams, F Eddie Hall
Projected Drury starting lineup: G Justin Racette, G Cody Wemette, G Anthony Sims, F Nik Andrews, F Tyler Benoit
Outlook: Sabis is seeking its first trip to the Division 2 finals. The Bulldogs reached five straight D3 finals, winning three titles prior to this year. Drury reached the D2 finals last year before losing to Hoosac. Drury is the deeper team but the Blue Devils need to play a perfect game to beat Sabis. Drury needs to control the pace, defend the 3-point shot and keep Sabis off the glass. Andrews is one of the best defenders in western Mass. He will face either Bey or King and he should hold them in check. What Drury does with the other will be key.
Pick: Sabis
