Boys Hoop semifinal previews
Interestingly enough all four teams left in Division 1 played in the HoopHall Classic. Check back Wednesday night for Division 2 previews. DIVISION 1 No. 2 East Longmeadow (17-4) vs. No. 6 Central (13-8), 6 p.m. DIVISION 3 No. 2 St. Joseph (15-6) vs. No. 6 Lee (13-9), 5 p.m.
Tuesday at AIC
No. 1 Northampton (17-4) vs. No. 4 Westfield (13-8), 8 p.m.
Projected Hamp starters: Pat Harrington, G; Jesse Coulon, G; Jake Laga, G; Ellis Cooper, F; Jake Konowitch, F
Projected Westfield starters: Jordan Santiago, G; Alex Garstka, G; Aaron Rogers, F; David Boardman, F; Dylan Willey, F
Outlook: Northampton won both matchups during the regular season, 77-62 and 66-62. Each team is deep. Westfield will go six deep on its bench. Hamp will go six deep as well. Key questions for Hamp: Can Cooper stay out of early foul trouble? What is Jesse Coulon’s status following his (insert Bill Belichick phrase) upper body injury? Key question for Westfield: Can it avoid costly turnovers? It will be interesting to see what Hamp coach Rey Harp does defensively. Will Cooper defend Rogers or will Harp go with Konowitch instead and put Cooper on Garstka? Hamp is seeking its first trip the Division 1 finals.
Pick: Northampton
Projected East Longmeadow starters: Ryan Mickiewicz, G; James Bertier, G; Dan Martin, F; Mike Ahmed, F; Devin Abad, F
Projected Central starters: Jaylen Brantley, G; Jordan Smith, G; Chris Profet, G; Kamari Robinson, F; Pat Thomas, F
Outlook: The Spartans won the only meeting 58-46. The Golden Eagles might be the defending sectional champ but this team is vastly different from last year. The team is young, athletic and quick. Defense and converting turnovers to easy baskets will be the key. East Longmeadow, like Northampton, has been building toward a title for a few years now. It’s hard to imagine this team not reaching the finals. The Spartans are deep and talented. When they are patient on offense and play defense they are tough to beat.
Pick: East Longmeadow
Wednesday at Curry Hicks Cage
No. 1 New Leadership (18-3) vs. No. 5 Lenox (14-8), 8 p.m.
Outlook: Seeing as how New Leadership beat nearly everyone in the Pioneer Valley, I guess it’s fitting it has to go through Berkshire County to win the title. Lenox allowed 52.9 points per game during the regular season and it will need all of that defense and more to slow down the Wildcats. Devonte Vanderpool, Phil Warrick and Eric Brown are fantastic. Kevin Carpenter averages close to 20 for Lenox but he’ll need help.
Pick: New Leadership
Outlook: These two teams split during the regular season. Lee won 62-59 on Jan. 11 and St. Joe’s won 66-60 on Feb. 9. Each team beat one quality opponent en route to the semifinals. Lee destroyed Holyoke Catholic 79-57. St. Joe’s held off Frontier 61-55. I’d be shocked if this game wasn’t close. I’m hoping Lee wins so there is a double-header of Lee basketball Saturday morning.
Pick: Lee
