Saturday’s high schools: South Hadley football falls short against Minnechaug, 27-26

The South Hadley football team had a chance to take a lead against Minnechaug in the closing minutes of their game Saturday.

The Tigers comeback fell short when Andres Lopez intercepted a 2-point conversion pass attempt to seal the Falcons 27-26 victory in South Hadley.

“We don’t really have a consistent kicker this year,” South Hadley coach Eric Scammons said. “We lost an all-state kicker in Liam Murphy so we went for two all day and unfortunately we were 1-for-4.”

South Hadley fell to 0-2. It was Minnechaug’s season opener.

“We made a lot of mental mistakes and assignment mistakes against East Longmeadow” in Week 1, Scammons said. “They capitalized on our mistakes. This week, we didn’t make those errors and didn’t turn it over nearly as much. The turnover game was equalized and minus the mental mistakes, we did a good job.”

A turnover on downs and a turnover gave the Falcons short field position in the second quarter. Minnechaug scored off both mistakes and took a 28-14 lead into halftime.

The second quarter our offense kind of sputtered and gave it back to them. The best defense against them is to have your offense on the field,” Scammons said. “Our offense was able to sustain drives more in the second half and keep it out of their hands.”

TJ Fitzell rushed 11 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, while Ryan Kleszczynski added 79 yards on 16 carries and one TD.

Quarterback Patrick Sears was 15 for 24 for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Pedro Santiago had five receptions for 47 yards and a score.
