Pettengill Insurance sweeps doublerheader with Northampton Post 28

After a come-from-behind win in eight innings in game one, Pettengill Insurance kept its momentum going for a rout in game two as it swept Northampton King & Cushman Post 28, 4-3 and 19-4 in American Legion action Sunday at Arcanum Field.

The teams played a doubleheader after Wednesday’s game was rained out.

Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning of the first game, Pat Sears stroked a two-out, two-run single to tie the game for the South Hadley squad.

Pettengill scored the winning run on a base-loaded wild pitch in the eighth.

Tim Horton had two hits and scored twice for Northampton.

In the second game, Pettengill (6-10) scored five times in the first inning and never looked back. Joe Ciolek had four hits and drove in four runs, while Sears and Nick Robert each had three hits, two runs and two RBIs.

Keith Natale had three hits and drove in a run for Northampton (5-10).

Amherst 7, Easthampton 2 — Daniel Hodgkins had three hits, two runs and two RBIs to lead Amherst (6-7) past Easthampton, Sunday at Ziomek Field.

Jamie Carey added two hits, two RBI and a run for Amherst, while Hunter Weyant had a hit and a run for Easthampton.

Amherst 6, Pettengill Insurance 3 — Tim Pruner’s two-run single in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and gave Amherst the win on the road, Saturday.

Jake Balderston added a two-run double for Amherst.

Brian Bak had a solo home run for Pettengill, while Ciolek added two hits and two RBIs.

Greenfield 12, Easthampton 2 — Easthampton struggled against Greenfield starter Nick York and fell to 6-8 on Saturday.

Belchertown 5, Agawam 2 — With the help of two Agawam errors, Post 239 scored three times in the top of the ninth to pull out the extra-inning win in the first game of their split double-header Sunday.

Bill Aldrich had a pinch hit RBI in the top of the seventh to force extra innings.

Aldenville 12, Belchertown 0 — The momentum from game one didn’t carry over in the second game as Post 239 dug a big hole early and never got on track.

T.J. Masella had two of Belchertown’s four hits in the loss.

Easthampton 6, Amherst 5 — Kyle Marek had three hits and scored twice while Tyler Vishaway had a hit and three RBIs for Easthampton Saturday.

Mohawk 13, Frontier 3 — Despite two hits each for Bailey Powers (one RBI) and Tim Hoar, Frontier fell at home Sunday.

Little League (11-12)

Belchertown 14, Southampton 4 — Jack Mankowsky had three hits and scored twice and Chase Kupinsky added two hits, including a solo home run, for Belchertown (2-1), in Saturday’s District 2 Tournament win. Southampton fell to 0-4 in pool play.

Belchertown 9, Amherst 3 — Austin Endelos had three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs for Belchertown, which scored four times in the first inning and rolled from there in the District 2 Tournament Sunday.

J.B. Mills had a two-run single to lead Amherst (2-2). Neither team advanced out of pool play.

Cal Ripken (10)

Northampton 8, Narragansett 1 — Top-seeded Northampton completed its sweep of Pool C Sunday and advanced to the semifinals of the State Cal Ripken Tournament.

Alex Houck went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, three RBIs and a run scored, while Dallas Elliott added three hits, three RBIs and a run scored.

Hamp will play No. 4-seed Frontier, Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Sutton.

Northampton 27, Turners Falls 1 — Nate Kelleher Mochak had four hits and scored five times to lead Northampton in its first game of the State Cal Ripken Tournament Saturday.

Northampton 6, Sutton 4 — Houck, Riley Cole and Will Sawyer each had RBI hits in the fifth inning of Hamp’s come-from-behind win over Sutton in the second game of the State Cal Ripken Tournament Saturday.

Frontier 12, Hudson 11 — Frontier earned its trip to the semis prevailing in a back-and-forth game with Hudson Sunday in the State Cal Ripken Tournament.

Matt Como had a home run, a double and three RBIs for Frontier.

Metro League Softball

Easthampton 6, Chicopee 2 — Easthampton scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Rachel Connell and Sydney Slattery each had two hits and two runs to lead Easthampton,

Easthampton 16, Chicopee 1 — Kayla McFarland (two runs) and Savannah Cavanaugh (three runs) each had four hits as Easthampton romped in the second game to stay perfect at 11-0.
