Tractor-trailer and produce stolen from F.L. Roberts truck stop plaza in Whately
WHATELY — Police are looking for someone who made off with a tractor-trailer and an undisclosed quantity and variety of produce.
Whately Police Chief James A. Sevigne Jr. said the driver parked at the F.L. Roberts truck stop plaza , left with a friend and returned Sunday night to find the vehicle, trailer and cargo, including fruit, missing.
“He parked his truck at the truck stop and went out with a friend and when he got back his truck and trailer were gone,” Sevigne said.
The key was left in the ignition and the cab unlocked, Sevigne said.
“That’s the message we try to get out, any public safety forums that we have, lock your house, lock your cars; it’s a common thing these days, people are looking for the easy,” Sevigne said. “Try the door, keys are in there, it makes it an easier target.”
Tractor-trailer theft is less common.
“Cars yes, but tractor-trailers, no, that’s definitely not a common thing,” Sevigne said.
The truck was taken sometime between 4 and 9 p.m., Sevigne said, and the investigation continues.
Details such as the quantity, value and variety of the produce — which included fruits and berries — or the destination of the truck were not available.
As of Monday afternoon the tractor-trailer remained missing. Police are looking for a red truck with Illinois plate number P749323 and a white trailer, plate number 170P151. Sevigne said the trailer is not marked and the cab carries the name of Illinois-based trucking company Euro Kam.
Sevigne asked anyone who sees the truck or trailer to call the regional dispatch number, 413-625-8200.
The F.L. Roberts truck stop plaza off Routes 5 and 10 is home to a gas station and the Whately Diner Fillin’ Station, known by either of those names.
