Frontier Regional skier Sean Doyle finished off his successful season with a pair of 12th place finishes at the state alpine championship at Berkshire East in Charlemont on Tuesday.

Doyle, a junior, recorded a time of 36.69 seconds in the slalom and 45.33 seconds in the giant slalom.

While his performance at states this year was an improvement over his 27th (slalom) and 33rd (giant slalom) finishes in 2012, Doyle was disappointed that a slip near the end of his slalom run cost him a shot at a better finish.

“Everybody struggled, but I made a big mistake on the slalom,” he said. “I messed up going through the flush, which cost me about two seconds. I feel like I’m doing a lot better, but I also feel like, (my performance at) states wasn’t really me. I could’ve done better.”

Doyle came into the race having finished first overall at the PVIAC individual championships on Feb. 12 with a combined time of 61.07. He took home his only individual win of the season at that race, also held at Berkshire East. He finished the slalom in 34.02. He finished third in giant slalom at 27.05.

Though his season got off to a bit of a rocky start after a ninth-place showing at the PVIAC opener on Jan. 8, Doyle said he got more comfortable as the season wore on and he got his legs under him, saying it took “a lot of hard work.”

Added Doyle, “I initially struggled, then started to figure out how to ski again. By the end of year things came together.”

With his senior year still ahead of him, Doyle believes a top finish in 2014 isn’t out of the question.

“I have a few more tri-state races this year, and I’m hoping for some good finishes. Hopefully top-5 in states next year.”

Behind Doyle in both races was Amherst Regional’s Greg Lerner, who finished 51st in the giant slalom (47.61) and 48th in the slalom (40.07). Gateway’s Austin Herman took home 66th in the giant slalom (48.51) and 52nd in the slalom (40.25). Frontier’s Jacob Conroy placed 96th in the giant slalom (51.23) and 86th in the slalom (43.40) to round out the top-100 finishers.

Holyoke Catholic’s Kevin Campbell, who was disqualified in the giant slalom, finished in 103rd in the slalom (46.19). Jon Simonds of Amherst picked up a pair of 106th-place finishes, crossing the finish line in 52.03 in the giant slalom and in 46.58 in slalom. Eli Ayers, also of Amherst, did not finish his giant slalom race, but took home 107th in the slalom (46.90).

Charles Denhart of Northampton was disqualified in the slalom and rounded out the finishers with a 55.30 time in the giant slalom, good for 117th.

In the girls giant slalom championship, Margaret O’Connell of Amherst placed 41st (48.63), Maddison Mientka of Northampton was 93rd (53.95), Caitlyn Bodoh of Gateway Regional was 94th (54.11), Holyoke Catholic’s Lauren Kennedy was 113th (59.55), Frontier’s Ally Zera was 114th (59.99) and Hannah Green of Gateway was 117th in 60.69.

In the slalom, local finishers were: Mientka (90th, 47.88), O’Connell (98th, 48.37), Bodoh (107th, 49.83), Zera (109th, 50.26), Northampton’s Lucy Sloan (115th, 51.77), Kennedy (117th, 52.65) and Green (118th, 53.19).
