The Hampshire Regional boys basketball turned in an outstanding defensive effort in a 40-28 victory over Southwick at home Thursday night.

The Raiders (4-3, 2-1 Bi-County North) held Rams’ leading scorer Mark O’Neill (15.4 points per game) scoreless and pulled away in the fourth quarter.

Shane Andrews scored a game-high 16 points for Hampshire, while Adam Laroche added 10 points and eight rebounds.

With the game tied 28-28 with 5:30 to play, Hampshire went on a 12-0 run to close out the victory.

Northampton 68, Agawam 59 — Jake Ross (16 points, 11 rebounds) and Stevie Roach (12 points, 10 rebounds) put up double-doubles to help lead the Blue Devils (7-2) past Agawam for the road win.

Ben Christoper also reached double figures for Northampton, scoring 14 points.

Amherst Regional 54, Sabis 40 — Justin Carey had 16 points, while Noris Cuevas-Nova and Reed Bixby each added eight as the Hurricanes (5-2) won in Springfield.

Greenfield 52, Easthampton 41 — Chris Starcun posted a double-double but the Eagles (5-5, 3-5 Hampshire East) couldn’t slow down the unbeaten Green Wave (8-0, 8-0).

Starcun had team highs with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dakota Wheeler hit double figures with 10 points, Tom Palaschak scored nine and Shaheim Torres added six with five assists.

Smith Academy 56, Mahar Regional 28 — Mat Sulda scored a game-high 20 points and recorded seven steals as the Falcons (8-1, 7-1 Hampshire West) cruised to an easy league victory despite getting into some foul trouble.

Derek McMahon picked up 12 points, six assists and three steals for Smith Academy.

St. Mary 61, Smith Vocational 51 — Three players reached double figures for the Vikings (1-5, 1-1 Tri-County) in the road loss.

Sam Sharpe scored a team-high 15 points, Jordan Castillo had 14 and Anthony Karch added 12.

Girls basketball

Granby 45, Frontier Regional 35 — Rebecca Sapoukey had 17 points and Meghan Sullivan added 11 as the Rams (8-0) stayed unbeaten with the win in South Deerfield.

Amanda Calvo scored a game-high 18 points in the loss for the Red Hawks (3-5).

Hockey

Belchertown 5, Central 5 — Adam Messier had a hat trick to lead the Orioles (1-5-2) to the independent tie at Smead Arena in Springfield.

Alex Bachand (assist) and Tommy Daley added a tally apiece for Belchertown, while Christian Assimus picked up a pair of assists.

Kyle Mikulski stopped 28 shots in goal.

Cathedral 8, Bridgewater-Raynham 1 — John Leonard of Amherst scored a goal and Adam Mercer of Belchertown made 11 saves as the Panthers (7-0-1) remained unbeaten with the win at The Olympia.
