Weekend high schools: Belchertown hockey inches closer to playoffs

Alex Bachand and Tommy Daley each scored twice Saturday to lead the Belchertown hockey team to a 4-3 victory over Turners Falls at Collins-Moylan Rink in Greenfield.

Jon Rodrigue, Louis Tonelli and Dylan Gillen picked up an assist each for Belchertown (8-7-2, 5-4-2 Fay-Wright), which sits just two points from clinching a postseason berth.

Kyle Green made 42 saves in the win.

Tim Atkins had a pair of tallies for the Indians (6-8-2, 3-8-1). Devin Rivera added a goal from Dan Moro, and Brandon Bryant stopped 40 shots.

South Hadley 5, East Longmeadow 2 — Ben Kravetz scored two goals with an assist as the Tigers (5-7-4, 1-6-3 Berry) earned their first league win on senior night.

Beau Kass, Jake Knowles and Nick Watkins each had a goal for South Hadley. Joe Whalen assisted three times, while Tom Crotty, Dominic Florence and Evan Sullivan each had one assist.

Devin Hoagland earned the win in goal with 22 saves.

Easthampton 7, Mount Everett 2 — Alex Zadworny (assist) had a hat trick and Mike Grise (goal, four assists) five points as the Eagles (7-5) won decisively Saturday evening at the Berkshire School.

Liam Anderson (assist), Zach Lewis and Jon Brodeur tallied once apiece, and Tim Pfau picked up an assist.

Sean Rose stopped 11 shots in the victory as the Eagles moved within two points of a playoff berth.

Amherst Regional 2, St. Mary 1 — Matt Gazaille accounted for both goals for the Hurricanes (5-10-1, 4-6-1 Fay-Wright) in the victory Saturday at Orr Rink.

Max Hopley, Marshall O’Leary and Jack Rees each assisted once, and Ben Thompson made 17 saves for Amherst.

Cathedral 3, Westford Academy 3 — John Leonard of Amherst earned an assist for the Panthers (12-2-4) in the tie Saturday at The Olympia.

Boys basketball

Smith Academy 81, Mohawk 46 — Derek McMahon scored a game-high 22 points as the Falcons (14-3, 11-2 Hampshire) cruised at home Saturday.

Keith Natale (17 points), David Longstreeth (13) and Austin Rogers (12) also reached double figures for Smith.

Wrestling

Victor Magalhaes and Clayton Yanosky earned three wins apiece Saturday for Granby at the Franklin Tech Eagle Duals in Turners Falls.

Eight other Rams wrestlers won once to help the team to three victories in four matches.

Nordic skiing

The Amherst Regional boys and girls teams both finished third Saturday in the Berkshire Nordic Sli League race at Notchview in Windsor.

Valerie Willocq came in ninth for the girls in 28 minutes, 3 seconds. Kale Wenczel led the boys in 13th at 23:48.

Pomfret 71, Williston 59 (OT) — Natalia Baum poured in 30 points but the Wildcats lost Saturday in Easthampton.

Sarah Marion of Granby had 12 points and Gia Parker added three for Williston.

Girls hockey

Williston 4, Kimball Union 0 — Meg Rickard scored twice and Christina Zalewski (goal, two assists) posted three points for the Wildcats (13-4-3) in the home win Saturday.

Maddie Hatch added a tally for Williston, whil Morgan Fisher stopped all four shots she saw.

Boys hockey

Millbrook 3, Williston 1 — Anthony Mantz scored from Seth Cupak to even the score, but the Wildcats (10-7-2) lost Saturday at home.

Tim Nowacki made 25 saves for Williston in the loss.

Girls squash

Williston 5, Ethel Walker 2; Suffield 4, Williston 3 — Three locals helped lead the Wildcats (4-9) to the win Saturday as the team split a pair of matches in Easthampton.

Caroline Borden of Amherst, Kira Wilson of Northampton and Julia Valine of Easthampton earned individual victories against Ethel Walker.

Wilson added a win in the loss to Suffield.

Boys squash

Williston 4, Millbrook 3; Suffield 6, Williston 1 — Edwin Kim won both of his individual matches Saturday as the Wildcats spilt a pair.
