Wednesday’s high school softball: Smith Academy edges Holyoke Catholic

Alanah McLear took care of most of the offense for the Smith Academy softball team Wednesday.

The junior had two of her team’s six hits and drove in three of its four runs, including a huge insurance run in the top of the seventh, as the Falcons downed Holyoke Catholic 4-3 at Holyoke Community College.

McLear’s RBI double pushed the Smith (3-2) lead to 4-1 and the Gaels (2-5) staged a rally that ended with two runners scoring and two more on in the seventh.

Shannon O’Driscoll was 3-for-4, including a two-run single in the seventh, but Catholic couldn’t come up with the equalizer against winning pitcher Lauren Grondin (three strikeouts, two walks).

The Gaels left 14 runners on base.
