Former Westfield State University president Evan Dobelle to pay damages in settlement with state

NORTHAMPTON — Former Westfield State University president Evan S. Dobelle has agreed to pay the state $185,000 to settle allegations that he used school money for personal spending and vacations during his tenure. Dobelle also cannot accept any positions, paid or unpaid, as an employee, adviser, consultant or fiduciary of any public higher education institution in the commonwealth, according to the agreement. The tentative settlement comes two months after Dobelle dropped a federal lawsuit against university and state officials after his attorneys requested to withdraw from the case, citing Dobelle’s failure to pay them.
