High school, college soccer coach identified as bicycle crash victim in Westfield
WESTFIELD (AP) — The 86-year-old man who died from injuries suffered when he was hit by a pickup truck while riding his bicycle in Westfield has been identified as a successful area high school and college soccer coach.
Police say John Kurty was injured when he was struck as he rode near Westfield State University at about 2 p.m. Tuesday. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he died.
The name of the driver has not been released because the accident remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
The Republican reports that Kurty won 153 games with 36 losses and 13 ties while coach at Westfield State from 1966 to 1977. Prior to Westfield State, he compiled a 150-19-19 record with three state titles at Ludlow High School.
