Weekend high schools: Belchertown girls basketball defeats Palmer

The Belchertown girls basketball team got its offense going in time Saturday to keep its league title hopes alive.

Jillian Cavanaugh and Téa Spellacy each scored 10 points as the Orioles defeated Palmer 42-31 at home.

Belchertown (13-5, 6-1 Bi-County East) can force a share of the title with Hampshire Regional (15-3, 7-0) with a win against the Raiders at home tonight at 7.

The Orioles trailed 13-12 at halftime, but scored 18 points in the third quarter and cruised to victory.

Cavanaugh had eight rebounds in the win.

Kelsey Shea added seven points and 12 rebounds.

Wahconah 61, Frontier Regional 53 (OT) — Amanda Calvo scored 18 points and Olivia Riordan added 14, but the Red Hawks (10-9) fell in Dalton in overtime Saturday.

Jordan Rowe added 12 points for Frontier, which led by four with 47 seconds left in regulation.

Warriors standout Gabby Lavinio netted a game-high 23 points, including two free throws with 0.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

Hockey

South Hadley 6, Turners Falls 1 — Jeff Beauregard scored twice and Tom Dowd (two assists), Nick Watkins, Alec Plotnikiewicz (assist) and Evan Sullivan each added one goal as the Tigers (14-3-2) won Saturday in Greenfield.

Devin Hoagland made 24 saves for South Hadley.

Trevor Peduzzi socred the lone goal for the Indians (7-8-2).

Easthampton 5, Chicopee Comp 3 — Mike Grise netted a hat trick and two assists as the Eagles (7-4-5) won Saturday in Holyoke.

Robby Carmell added one goal and two assists, while Alex Zadworny had one goal and one assist.

Matt Sarafin made 24 saves in net.

West Springfield 6, Amherst Regional 2 — Jason Sloat and Alex Rivers (assist) each had a goal in the loss for the Hurricanes (3-11-3).

Eddy Sablak made 34 saves for Amherst.

St. Mary 7, Belchertown 2 — Austin Duhaime and Louis Tonelle each scored a goal for the Orioles (1-13-3) in the loss at home Saturday.

Chicopee 7, Greenfield 5 — Cam Woodward, a Smith Academy student who plays for the Green Wave (9-8), had an assist in the team’s loss Saturday in Holyoke.

Boys basketball

Monson 66, Gateway 46 — Calvin Dowers scored 13 points and Ryan Fisk added 11, but the Gators (2-17) fell at home Sunday.

Williston 42, Cheshire 21 — Natalia Ovando scored a game-high 14 points as the Wildcats (8-9) won in Cheshire, Conn., Saturday.

Gabby Thomas of Florence added seven points and three steals.

Girls hockey

Loomis 5, Williston 4 — Maddy Jerolman scored a pair of goals, but the Wildcats (9-5-1) fell at home Saturday.

Christina Zalewski added a goal and an assist, while Laura Aptowitz had two assists. Alex Starzyk scored a goal.
