Weekend Planner: Music

Heir to the great tradition of Russian composers including Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky, Sergei Prokofiev composed five piano concertos notable for their maniacal demands on the soloist. The most popular of these, the third, is set for a performance Saturday night by the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, with pianist Ralph Votapek appearing as soloist in celebration of the 50th anniversary of his breakout win of the first Van Cliburn competition in 1962. Also on the all-Russian program: Alexander Borodin’s lyrical overture to his opera “Prince Igor,” Ukrainian folk songs by Tchaikovsky, plus the latter’s uniquely styled “Little Russian” Symphony.

7:30 p.m. at Springfield’s Symphony Hall. $22-$59; ages 4-17 half-price. 788-7033 (www.citystage.symphonyhall.com)
