Police say alleged shoplifter jumps off Memorial Bridge in West Springfield

Police told The Republican of Springfield that the man stole nearly $15 worth of merchandise from a grocery store in West Springfield on Sunday morning and fled.

Officers say the man jumped into the river and was later found clinging to a bridge pillar by firefighters who had launched a rescue boat.

The man’s name hasn’t been released. He was arrested, and police say they’re trying to confirm his identity.
