Charges expected in South Hadley motorcycle crash that injured two motorists

SOUTH HADLEY — Police continue to investigate a Tuesday night crash that involved a motorcycle and sedan, injured two people and shut down a section of Route 202 for several hours. No charges had been filed as of Wednesday afternoon.

“The preliminary investigation into this matter suggests that the motorcycle’s speed may have been a contributing factor to the collision,” Mary Carey, a spokeswoman for the Northwestern district attorney’s office, said Wednesday.

South Hadley Police Chief David J. LaBrie said he anticipates charges will be filed. The South Hadley Police Department and Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating the collision in consultation with the district attorney’s office. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section also was called in to investigate.

Authorities identified Alexandru Vacarciuc, 24, of Greenfield, as the motorcyclist injured in the crash on Route 202 near Oakwood Circle and Brigham Road in South Hadley about 5:30 p.m. Police say Vacarciuc rear-ended a car turning onto Route 202 from Brigham Road.

LaBrie said South Hadley officers who were on the scene reported that Vacarciuc was conscious and speaking after the crash and described his motorcycle as being “in pieces in the road.”

Vacarciuc was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for non-life-threatening injuries and was listed in fair condition Thursday. The driver of the sedan, who police did not identify, suffered minor injuries, LaBrie said.

The accident occurred minutes after Granby police reported seeing a motorcycle traveling south on Route 202 at an estimated 100 mph toward South Hadley.

A Granby patrol officer who had turned on his lights and siren and attempted to pursue the motorcycle was ordered to stop any pursuit for safety reasons, Granby Police Sgt. Gary Poehler said Tuesday night.

Vacarciuc crashed into the sedan about a mile over the town line into South Hadley and about 1½ miles from where the Granby officer had seen the motorcycle traveling at a high speed.
